Is Separation of Church and State in Peril? A foundational promise from our Founding Fathers

Letters to The Editor

It’s the perfect moment to write about separation of church and state, as the state of Louisiana has legislated that school districts must display the 10 Commandments in every classroom in their schools, and that it must be at least 11”x14”, in large, easily readable font.

Louisiana will no doubt soon be followed by other schools in other states, in this clear betrayal of our Constitutional right to religious freedom, which includes having the choice to not practice any religion at all.

We must always remember the origins of our country, founded by people fleeing religious oppression and persecution.

Our Founding Fathers, never forgetting the origins of our country, cemented our religious freedom in our Constitution, remaining to this day at the heart of our democracy, and modeled by many nations around the world. They considered this freedom to be so important that they included it as a fundamental freedom, in the first sentence of the first Amendment.

We can never allow religious fanatics to decay our democratic principles and rights that remain central to the freedoms that so many Americans have fought and died to protect.

It’s time to take action to protect all American’s rights to send their children to school without fear they will be influenced in a way they do not support or practice in their homes.

There may have been a time we could have considered the US a Christian nation, but that is no longer the case. America is a mix of many faiths and beliefs, and we’re all the better for it.
